The showdown between Adobe Lightroom AI Masking and ON1 Photo Raw 2023 AI Masking

No matter what you think about AI, it is here and it has crossed over into the photography space. For better or for worse, Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. In the photography space, I think this is a good thing personally, but many people are fearful that it will replace photographers and the need for photo editors.

In this video, I compare the industry giant Adobe Lightroom to a lesser-known program ON1 Photo Raw 2023 which could be a contender for anyone looking to escape the subscription model.

Hi Chris,

I just watched the stream and gave a comment on Youtube. I agree with your conclusions, but you made a few remarks about missing quick time ai. Quite soon after the initial release it came back in and if I understand correct masking is also improved. Maybe you could add that in the comments? That would make On1 look a bit better 😉.

Yea that is a fair comment they did bring back Quick Mask AI. My intent was not to make ON1 look bad, but instead highlight that ON1 does have some room to grow. I will update that in the comments, but I also made a dedicated video about the update to ON1 adding the Quick Mask AI too.

Hey Chris; I watched this when it was live and am still blown away by the results. One thing I have noted over the years that really sets these two companies apart is the way they release features. ON1 builds, releases it and hopes for the best, all the while marketing it as the best thing since sliced bread. Adobe is aways a little late to the table with features, but they always work and they don't say much about it. They don't need to, they are the king of the hill, and all the pro photographers will talk about it for them, mainly because they get free 10 Tb accounts. From a standpoint of software reliability we all know…

Yea this was an older stream, but I wanted to share this because I get questions on what I think about ON1 vs Lightroom. My stance is still that I love ON1, but have tremendous respect for LrC and Adobe because they always perform. I guess that is also to be expected for a company that has that much money. I still think ON1 can really carve out a good share of the market if they 1) release stable programs, 2) release features that work, 3) add removable curves nodes. The last one is just a personal preference, but it would be nice. I think ON1 is innovative and they are moving in the right direction, but I would agree…
